the Face of the DADT repeal

GLASS, originally uploaded by _Adam H.

I recently had the opportunity to go to the Great Lakes Naval Base and shoot photos for the Wisconsin Gazette of active duty service members who are now able to serve as openly gay. These Naval Petty Officers that were interviewed, including the sailor pictured, had formed a group for other openly gay members of the navy, and talking with them and taking their photos at the base, I was really surprised at how positive their superior officers (who were just going about their day, walking by, doing their jobs, not really aware that the press was there). It was not what I expected to see going in, it was a very positive experience on the whole and I did not get the impression that these kids (they were really just kids) had been prompted, or that we were being manipulated. It was a pretty positive experience on the whole.
